NEW ANTI-PIRACY INITIATIVE ANNOUNCED BY FEDS

On July 23rd, 1999, the U.S. Justice Department, the FBI, and the U.S. Customs Service unveiled a new effort to combat intellectual property crimes, especially those related to Internet facilitated piracy and online distribution of counterfeit products. The initiative will begin by targeting New York, southern Florida and the high tech regions of California and Massachusetts. The initiative also calls for using forfeiture procedures and increased criminal penalties for copyright infringement.
